Fraud or Dispute
Members often reach out to the credit union, unsure whether they should file a debit card fraud claim or a merchant dispute. The key difference is simple: it depends on whether you, as the cardholder, authorized the transaction with the merchant in the first place.
Disputes
If you deliberately made a transaction that doesn’t appear correct on your account, you should first attempt to resolve the dispute with the merchant. If you are unsuccessful at resolving the dispute with the merchant, you will need to complete a Unauthorized Transactions Dispute Form. Once the form is completed, we will submit the dispute on your behalf to VISA. VSA will make a final determination as to whether we can charge back the transaction to the merchant for your purchase. If we can charge back the transaction, you will be reimbursed for the purchase. However, if we cannot charge back the transaction, you will not be reimbursed. Please be advised that once filed, disputes can take up to 30 to 45 days to be resolved.
Examples of Disputes
- Used your debit card to reserve a hotel room and cancelled with the hotel in accordance with their cancellation guidelines, and you were still charged for the room.
- Purchased an item using your debit card, and later returned the item to the merchant, but your card was never credited for the return.
- You were charged an incorrect amount for a transaction, for example $400. Rather than $40.

Fraud
A Fraudulent transaction occurs only when you have no knowledge of who used your card and you can state with certainty that you were not aware of the transaction. It is critical that you notify us immediately if you detect fraudulent debit card transactions on your account. You will need to complete a Fraud Cardholder Dispute Form, which will also need to be notarized before being submitted.
