The Perfect Summer Travel Companion

Use Your Mobile Wallet

As you make plans to travel this summer to theme parks or sporting events you may find that many are no longer accepting cash payments. Some venues are using cashless systems due to the rise in the use of contactless payment options like mobile wallets. In light of the recent pandemic this also helps maintain the health and safety of staff and guests. As a Baylands member, your smartphone is now your perfect summer travel companion to visit cashless venues. The BFCU Visa debit card is compatible with popular mobile wallets like Google Pay, Apple Pay,or Samsung Pay.

Talk with a Baylands Staff member to ensure you and the mobile wallet of your choice are ready to travel this Summer to places like Fenway Park or Busch Gardens.

Summer Money Lessons for Kids

Now that the long days of summer are here, have you considered looking at options to keep kids busy and teach them about the value of money? The summer is a great opportunity to try some fun challenges for kids that can teach them to get a better understanding of personal finance basics. Here are 3 fun ways to teach your kids about money.

1. The Coin Saving Challenge: With this simple challenge, your kids can learn about the importance of saving money by working toward a specific goal. Whether it’s a new video game console for themselves or a birthday present for grandma, all they have to do is place any coins they earn or find into a jar until it all adds up to the price of the item.

Then, you can help the kids exchange their coins for cash or deposit into their savings account. Depending on how old your kids are, you may also want to challenge them to do the counting themselves—what better way to learn that patience can come with a payoff!

2. The Money Matching Challenge: For one month, task your kids with contributing any money they earn from doing chores, mowing the lawn, delivering papers, or any other odd job, to a jar. On the last day of the month, have them count up the total amount and then match it. Boom. Your kids just doubled their earnings (and learned the basic concept of investing)!

3. The Contest Challenge: Did you know there are quite a few creative contests kids can enter to win cash prizes? Whether junior is an aspiring author, a budding artist, or a whiz at science, there’s a contest out there geared to his or her particular talents.

These simple challenges may help get your kids on the path to financial literacy early by making the journey exciting and rewarding. While your kids are learning and having fun, you can rest easy knowing that you’re preparing them for a better financial future.

Credit Q&A

How can I strengthen my credit score to buy a car or house?

Whether you're trying to buy your first car or are looking to purchase a new home, your credit score plays a major role. Working to improve your credit score is an important goal and puts you in the best position for favorable rates & terms.

Here are 3 Useful Tips for Improving your Credit
Set Up Automatic Bill Payments to make payments on time. The best way to avoid missing a monthly loan or credit card payment is to put your bills on autopay. Make sure you have enough money in your checking account to cover each bill to avoid an overdraft. When you know you won't have to deal with a sudden score dip after a forgotten bill, you can focus on other ways to improve credit.
Keep old accounts open. Even if you no longer use an old credit card, it's typically best to keep the account open. That's because your credit scores benefit from a long credit history and a high total credit limit. Closing established accounts will shorten the average age of your accounts and could lower your total credit limit.
Track your credit score. When you monitor your credit score, you can intervene quickly if it drops. You can address factors that influence your score, such as high balances, late payments or too many recent inquiries. You are eligible to receive a free copy of your credit report every 12 months from each credit reporting company.

BONUS: Avoid Credit Repair Scams
Some for-profit companies claim to be able to remove negative information from your credit report for a fee. But the truth is that no company can legally erase information from your file if it's accurate. Avoid spending money on credit repair and take tried-and-true steps to improve your score instead, like lowering debt balances and paying your bills on time.

Commitment to Service and Dedication

At our recent Annual Shareholder's meeting, we recognized our outstanding volunteers who have been instrumental in the governance of the Credit Union.

We would like to express our grateful appreciation and say "Thank You" to:

• Michael A. Bellanca: 12 Years of Volunteer Service
• Rebecca B. Rubino: 21 Years of Volunteer Service
• David M. DuPuis: 28 Years of Volunteer Service

Their sound judgment and guidance on the Supervisory Committee have been a valuable asset to the credit union and we wish them well in retirement.

Volunteer Opportunities

Become a member volunteer and have an impact on your credit union.

We are proud to have members just like you who volunteer to support the credit union difference. Our credit union's Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee are made up of members who strive to ensure that the credit union operates in the best interest of its membership, help shape the vision of the credit union’s future, and keep the credit union true to its mission. Some basic expectations of a credit union volunteer are:

A belief in and desire to nurture the credit union philosophy of “people helping people”
A willingness to attend and participate in meetings, which could be once a month or once a quarter depending on the role
An understanding of and/or willingness to learn about the credit union operations and movement
The desire to be a team player to lead the credit union’s success
To at all times, act in the best interest of the members and the credit union

Baylands FCU is currently seeking members who are willing to serve in volunteer roles within our Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee.

Board of Directors
The Board of Directors acts on behalf of the membership to oversee the progress of the credit union to ensure its strategic objectives and help shape the vision for how the credit union can best serve its membership.

Supervisory Committee
The Supervisory Committee is responsible for ensuring that the credit union is operating in a safe and judicious manner and in the best interest of the membership.
