Sizzle Up a Summer of Savings!

Summer is heating up, and here at Baylands we have some new chefs in our kitchen.  First and foremost, we are excited to welcome Spruance Cellophane Credit Union members to the Baylands family. We are honored to have been chosen by the membership as their new home and partner credit union. Once the merger is complete, this will provide more services for their members as well as a new branch in Chesterfield for the entire Baylands family. Read more about the merger and our new staff on the following pages.  We will be making the official transfer September 28 – October 1, so look for more details on our website.

Have you downloaded our new mobile app yet?  It’s here to make your summer plans even easier.  You can transfer money, look up account balances and even make deposits on the go. Apps are available for Android and Apple so download it today.

We hope you are grilling up lots of summer fun.  Please let us know how we can make it the best yet.  As always, it’s an honor to serve you and your family.

Our Family is Growing! Welcome Spruance! chesterfield branch photo

Baylands Family Credit Union is pleased to announce its merger with Spruance Cellophane Credit Union in Chesterfield VA.

Spruance CU was created in 1953 to offer membership to employees of the Dupont Spruance Plant on Jefferson Davis Highway in Richmond, which manufactures Kevlar and other material. The credit union has 5.5 million in assets and over 850 members.

There has been a consolidation trend in recent years that has affected several smaller local credit unions and is rooted in difficulties keeping up with regulations.  This was best summarized by CEO Chris Burgess when he stated, “The driving force for all of that is the regulatory environment.  More and more compliance, particularly since the recession. And for some of the smaller credit unions like Spruance, they just can’t keep up with all that stuff.”

The merger provides Spruance members with greater product and service options whileBaylands achieves itsgoals of continued growth and service to the community.  The Chesterfield Branch will enhance our service area, and members are encouraged to use any of our convenientlocations including  existing branches in West Point, Norge and New Kent, for any transaction needs. It is also our distinct pleasure to serve the Spruance Credit Union membership with the help of the same employees that have worked so hard for them over the years.

Reminder for All Members: The transfer of Spruance accounts will take place 9/28 – 10/1.  During this time, some services may be limited or temporarily unavailable.  Check our website at baylandsfcu.org  for updates and to see how the transition may affect you.

4 Tips for Homeowner’s Insurance Claims when you have a mortgage!

1. Contact your insurance company if you have any property damage. Your first step is to contact your homeowner’s insurance company and file a claim with them. Find out when an adjustor will come out.

2. Call your mortgage company. Let them know what type of damage has occurred and that you have reported it to the insurance company. Your mortgage company will communicate to you what actions need to be taken for insurance funds to be disbursed.

3. Choose the right contractor. Make sure the contractor you choose is licensed and/or bonded according to your state’s requirements.  Also, check that they are fully insured with proper certification. You may also want to ask family or friends for referrals, and consider checking the Better Business Bureau.

4. Contact your mortgage company after you receive the insurance check. When you receive your insurance check, you’ll notice that it is made out to you and your mortgage company. Mortgage providers have a financial interest in ensuring your property is restored. Notify them as soon as you get your check to ensure repairs are completed appropriately and any inspections are scheduled, if necessary.
