Baylands Spring Shred-A-Thon

Saturday -  May 4, 2024
10:00am -12:00pm

New Kent Branch: 2111 Pocahontas Trail Quinton, VA

Stop by our New Kent location for our Spring 2024 Shred-A-Thon event to be held in partnership with ProShred® and Proclaiming Grace Outreach of New Kent County. This is a great opportunity to securely dispose of unwanted paperwork and sensitive documents along with helping some local families in need. Use this event to get rid of old paperwork such as bills, credit card statements, old tax returns, etc. You are welcome to bring up to three file boxes or paper bags per vehicle. (Paper grocery bags or paper boxes should not exceed 18”L x 12”W x 10”H). We invite you to also bring a non-perishable food item to the event to donate to Proclaiming Grace Outreach. Your donation will go a long way towards helping local families battling food insecurity.

Spend Smart Tip

Spring Break Money Tips

Spring Break vacations can be expensive, but with a little planning and by following some money-saving tips, you can have a great time at an affordable price. Here are a few suggestions:

1. If your destination is within driving distance, consider using your car instead of flying. You'll save a lot of money on flights and car rentals. If you have a bike, you can bring that along and save on gas.

2. Instead of booking a hotel room, consider renting a home using AirBnB or VRBO. This can be significantly cheaper, especially if you're traveling with a few friends. You'll also be able to make your own meals, if you like, instead of eating at restaurants.

3. Staycations are still a popular and super-affordable spring break option, especially for large families or tight budgets. You can pretend you're a tourist in your own town and visit low-cost local attractions. If you do choose a staycation, try to set some limits on everyday tasks to make it feel different from an ordinary day.

Don't let your Spring Break put you into debt. With a little prep and planning, you can have a great vacation that fits your budget!

Mortgage Q&A

Are there special programs to help first-time homebuyers?

When buying a home, a down payment is a sum of money that you pay upfront to complete a real estate transaction. Down payments are a percentage of the home's total purchase price. The amount required for the down payment will depend on the type of mortgage you choose. While it is recommended to pay a down payment of 20% for a conventional loan, there are other mortgage programs available with minimum down payments ranging from 0% to 5%.

These programs include FHA and USDA loans, as well as other first-time homebuyer loans. To determine which loan type suits you best, look into the various mortgage programs you qualify for. Our experienced Baylands Home Team can help figure out available options that may work best for you and your unique home ownership journey.
